Small US companies that collect personal data through a website and have no privacy team

Not enterprises with a data protection officer, and not law firms: this product explains no law and gives no advice

Count it, publish it, then prove you answered

The count
What the document actually has to cover A privacy policy owes a disclosure for every category you collect, every purpose you use it for and every regime you are in scope for. The sample firm here reaches 15 before anybody writes a sentence, and 35 category-by-purpose statements it has to be able to defend.
The clock
Counted from receipt, not from when you noticed California gives 45 days from receipt of the request, extendable once by another 45 with notice. The EU gives one month, extendable by two further months. Both run from the day it arrived, which is why the receipt date is the first thing the record holds.
The record
What you searched, what went out, and when An inbox folder proves an email exists. A request record proves you searched the systems you said you searched, released what you said you released, and did it inside the deadline. Only one of the two answers the question anybody asks afterwards.

Dsarvo against the way most small companies do this

Almost nobody starts with software. They start with a generated policy from three years ago and an inbox folder, and it works until the first request that has to be evidenced.

What it costs

Dsarvo: $10 a month for the whole company

A generated policy and an inbox folder: Free until the first request, then whatever the emergency costs

What you set up first

Dsarvo: Nothing. The builders work before you have an account

A generated policy and an inbox folder: Nothing either, which is the appeal and the problem

Where the deadline lives

Dsarvo: Against the request, counted from its receipt date

A generated policy and an inbox folder: In somebody's head, or a calendar reminder set after the fact

What you can produce later

Dsarvo: The search, the release, the approver and the date

A generated policy and an inbox folder: An email thread, if nobody has left the company since

What it does not do

Dsarvo: No risk register, no control testing, no legal advice

A generated policy and an inbox folder: None of those either

The difference is not the document. It is whether, six months later, you can show what you searched and the date you answered.

Tools

Size the paperwork before you write a word of it

California gives you 45 days and the EU gives you a month. Dsarvo is four free builders that size the privacy paperwork you actually owe: the sample firm here owes 15 disclosures, needs 20 rows in its cookie table and has 7 vendors with no signed agreement: and a $10 record that shows every request was answered inside the clock.

Free to use. No account, no card, no sign-up.

Dsarvo Pro

$10

per month, whole team

Dsarvo Pro turns an inbox thread into a record you can produce

The builders tell you what you owe. Pro is for the day somebody asks you to prove you answered: the request, the search, the approval and the date, kept together instead of scattered across an inbox.

  • Download the document as a file you can edit, circulate and keep.
  • Your document without our name on the footer of every page.
  • Keep this document, with its version number and the date it was published.
  • Your company's name and logo on the document instead of ours.
  • Send the answer to the person who asked, from inside the workspace, so the date it went is the date on the record.

Free for 14 days. No card needed.
